Making Good Decisions

By Mel Lawrenz

The book of Proverbs, and indeed the whole of Scripture, continually tells us to apply good wisdom to our decisions. Here are 15 questions to ask yourself whenever you’re facing an important decision.

  • Which choice here will honor God?
  • Which choice is consistent with good values?
  • What are my motives in this decision?
  • Which choice is just and fair? Is there biblical teaching that bears on this decision?
  • Have I taken enough time to think this decision through?
  • Is this choice something I could stand by if printed in a newspaper?
  • Would I be glad for this choice to be mentioned at my funeral?
  • Is this decision of eternal consequence?
  • What consequence will this particular choice have in ten years?
  • Am I making this choice only because I’m being pressured by other people?
  • How will this choice affect other people?
  • Should others be involved in this decision, or is it mine alone?
  • What do wise people who know me well think about this?
  • Have I prayed well about this decision?
